FEATURED NEWS AT TCMC

Film: The Mask You Live In

Join us for a special one-time showing (and reception afterwards) of the 2013 film "The Mask You Live In" organized by Melanie Paradise in cooperation with the Twin Cities Dads Group and The Twin Cities Men's Center. Melanie wants to bring a diverse audience together to network and gain a better understanding of each other's experiences and perceptions with the film as the catalyst. She writes: "What speaks to you and what misses the mark?"

Movie Presentation: "The Mask You Live In" follows boys and young men as they struggle to stay true to themselves while negotiating America's narrow definition of masculinity. Pressured by the media, their peer group, and even the adults in their lives, our protagonists confront messages encouraging them to disconnect from their emotions, devalue authentic friendships, objectify and degrade women, and resolve conflicts through violence.

These gender stereotypes interconnect with race, class, and circumstance, creating a maze of identity issues boys and young men must navigate to become 'real' men. Experts in neuroscience, psychology, sociology, sports, education, and media also weigh in, offering empirical evidence of the 'boy crisis' and tactics to combat it.

"The Mask You Live In" ultimately illustrates how we, as a society, can raise a healthier generation of boys and young men.

In Memorium: Randy Genrich

On August 7, 2018 we lost a well-known member of The Twin Cities Men's Center, Randy Genrich. He was active for many years in various capacities from volunteer to facilitator to mentor. Perhaps best known, he served as our long-time office manager. For many men, Randy was the face of TCMC. On behalf of the TCMC, we thank Randy for all his years of service. He will be truely missed.

Any of you who would like to reflect on his contributions to the center, memory or connections with him are invited to a gathering on Sunday, August 19th from 5 - 7 PM at TCMC. The program will be led by Dan Gorbonow.

I hope that all of you will participate, all who can be there. Grief work and honoring our own and shared losses is important men's work.

In consolation for our shared grief,
In sweetness for a life of loving service,
In solidarity for the realization of men's healing,
and making the world a place of beauty and justice.
